This WebGL experience created an alternate interactive storyline telling the story of what has occurred between the original feature film Independence Day and 20 years later where the storyline is picking up for the sequel Independence Day 2: Resurgence.
Using an interactive timeline linking the plot of the original Independence Day with its sequel, users can scroll to view twelve key events recreated around a 3D globe that represents the worldwide impact of different storylines. Design began in Cinema4D, with compositing in AfterEffects and 2D work in Photoshop. Custom engines were created to tackle physics, global positioning, animation, and sound.
The site immediately went viral on launch, receiving over 1 million visits and 17 million page views during its first 24 hours.
